The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department received some specialized training this week (March 16, 2026).
City Commissioner Robin Lerseth said the joint training exercise was with a group based based at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
The 82nd Civil Support Team provides support to local, state, and federal agencies during incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive hazards. The training provided an opportunity for local responders to better understand how the Civil Support Team can assist during hazardous materials incidents or other complex emergency situations.
Mayor Steve Harding said Pierre residents may not see the firefighters training while it happens, but the training plays a critical role in keeping the community safe. He said strong partnerships are essential in public safety, and training with the 82nd Civil Support Team allows Pierre’s firefighters to share knowledge, coordinate resources, and strengthen the response capabilities we rely on to protect us.
The Pierre Fire Department regularly participates in a variety of training and preparedness exercises to maintain readiness and ensure the community’s safety.
