The South Dakota Association of County Commissioners (SDACC) and the South Dakota Municipal League (SDML) are proud to announce that Senator Randy Deibert has been selected as the recipient of the inaugural Champion of Local Control Award in recognition of his steadfast support for local decision-making and his commitment to ensuring that the people closest to the issue are empowered to make the best decisions for their communities.
The award was jointly established by SDACC and SDML to recognize legislators who demonstrate exceptional leadership in protecting and advancing the principle of local control in South Dakota. Senator Deibert was selected as the first-ever recipient because of his consistent belief that county commissioners, city councils, mayors, and local officials are best positioned to understand the unique needs and priorities of the citizens they serve.
“Senator Deibert has been a strong advocate for the principle that government functions best when decisions are made locally,” said SDACC Executive Director Kris Jacobsen. “He understands that local officials are directly accountable to their communities and are often in the best position to respond to local needs, challenges, and opportunities.”
Throughout his legislative service, Senator Deibert has worked collaboratively with county and municipal officials on issues including infrastructure, public safety, taxation, housing, and economic development. Local leaders across South Dakota have appreciated his willingness to listen to local concerns and his recognition that statewide mandates are not always the best fit for every community.
“South Dakota’s communities are diverse, and effective governance requires flexibility and trust in local leadership,” said SDML Executive Director Sara Rankin. “Senator Deibert has consistently demonstrated respect for the role of local governments and the importance of allowing communities to chart their own course whenever possible.”
Senator Randy Deibert said, “I am truly honored to receive the Champion of Local Control Award from the South Dakota Association of County Commissioners and the South Dakota Municipal League. Local officials are the individuals closest to the people they serve, and they understand the unique needs and challenges of their communities better than anyone else. I have always believed strong local control leads to stronger communities, better solutions, and greater accountability. I deeply appreciate the dedication of our county commissioners, mayors, council members, and local leaders across South Dakota who work every day to serve their neighbors and improve their communities.”
The organizations noted that Senator Deibert’s leadership reflects a broader understanding that strong local control helps foster innovation, responsiveness, accountability, and stronger communities throughout South Dakota.
