South Dakota Wildland Fire held its annual preseason briefing and welcome event for new seasonal firefighters (May 19, 2026) ahead of a potentially demanding fire season. Governor Rhoden was also in attendance, and his presence underscored appreciation for the men and women who protect communities, natural resources, and critical infrastructure in the state.
“South Dakota’s firefighters are on the front lines protecting our people, property, and natural resources,” said Governor Rhoden. “Whether they’re battling wildfires, serving rural communities, or responding in our cities, it’s critical that we provide them with the tools, training, and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”
Earlier this year, Governor Rhoden and Wildland Fire cut the ribbon on two major new wildland fire facilities in Hot Springs and Rapid City, providing modern upgrades that strengthen the state’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to wildfire threats.
In addition, funding has been secured to replace worn-out chainsaws used by wildland firefighters and to provide $5 million in grants for personal protective equipment (PPE) for volunteer fire departments across the state. Recognizing the need for expanded coordination in eastern South Dakota, a new East River Fire Management Officer position has also been established to lead wildland fire operations and support emergency management efforts in the region.
During the most recent legislative session, the Legislature passed and Governor Rhoden signed six key measures directly supporting fire service efforts statewide:
- SB 68 – Provides $2.65 million for wildfire suppression costs
- SB 136 – Allocates $5 million for PPE grants for volunteer firefighters
- HB 1001 – Enhances controlled burning efforts to reduce fuel loads
- HB 1002 – Increases meal cost allowances for wildland firefighters
- HB 1326 – Appropriates $160,000 for an East River Fire Management Office
- HB 1326 – Provides $435,000 in general funds for South Dakota Wildland Fire Operations
From boots-on-the-ground engagement to targeted investments and policy support, these actions reflect a comprehensive approach to strengthening fire service capabilities and ensuring firefighters across South Dakota are equipped for the challenges they face.
