“This is it”, says Aaron Rodgers, who just signed a shocking 1-year $25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers just a few days ago. Just a few minutes ago, Aaron Rodgers told media that this will be his final season in the NFL. “Yes, this is it”, said the quarterback who will be officially (and you could say allegedly) retiring after the 2026-27 season.
Rodgers deal surprised a lot of folks after the Steelers picked Drew Allar in this years draft, and also have Ohio State national champion Will Howard on the roster. The other half of the shock is the aging quarterback commanding $25 million after an embarrassing first round playoff exit at the hands of the Houston Texans and their abbrasive defense a year ago.
The big move made by the Steelers before re-signing Rodgers was parting ways with long-time head coach Mike Tomlin after a long streak of winning seasons, but an inability to win the big one.
The Steelers also brought on Rodgers former head coach from his time in Green Bay, Mike McCarthy, which brought speculation after the two had their own parting of ways years ago. The split and aftermath was not entirely cordial, however, the team believed those differences were in the past and the two could help each other.
Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.65 million deal with the Steelers in June 2025, reaching the decision after several months of contemplation. Soon after, Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” that the 2025 season would likely be his last.
Former Green Bay quarterbacks have not always stuck to their word about retirement, circa the Brett Favre back and forth in and out of retirement many years ago. Which begs the question, will this actually be Rodgers last season in an NFL uniform?
42-year old Rodgers recovered from an Achilles tear when he played with the Jets three seasons ago and has not suffered any significant injuries since.
