Joan Oster, 76, Eureka, SD, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Arrowhead Senior Living Center in Osage Beach, MO.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM, Monday, July 6, 2026 at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan gage leading the service. Interment follows at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Eureka. Visitation commences 10:00 AM Monday.
Joan Irene Oster, daughter of Hulda (Wolff) and Albert Oster, was born at the Eureka Community Hospital on July 11, 1949. She also had a twin sister, Joyce, born 36 minutes earlier.
Joan grew up on a farm in the southwest corner of Eureka. She graduated from Eureka High School, Class of 1967, and then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for 1 year. She returned back to Eureka and worked 3 years for NWGF Mutual Insurance Company as a policy typist. The mountains were calling her so she moved to Colorado for several years working various jobs. Her next adventure was working at Earth Resources Observation Systems in Sioux Falls. She missed the mountains so much she ventured out to Montana and worked for the Gallatin National Forest for several years. From there she transferred to working for the Superior National Forest in Duluth, MN, where she retired in 2005.
Joan always loved the outdoors whether camping, biking or skiing. She loved to travel. Some very special highlights were trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Alaska, Jamaica and Hawaii.
She loved doing crafts which included painting Ukrainian eggs, oil painting, wood carving, and making pinecone wreathes and baskets. She also got started in making her own cards.
Joan is survived by her sister Joyce Burke and Husband Lynn in Camdenton, MO; one nephew; one niece; two grand nephews; and two grand nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father, Albert, on April 24, 2014; her mother, Hulda, on August 26, 2001; her brother, Lee, on September 4, 2022; and an infant great-nephew, Nathaniel Burke.
Vocal Selections will be “On Eagle’s Wings” and “The Lord is My Shepherd”.
Casketbearers will be Nephew Troy Burke and wife Jeanette in Blaine, MN; Niece Traci Fisher and husband Jeremy in Omaha, NE; Grandnephews Jayden Fisher and Joshua Burke; and Grandnieces Julia Burke and Sadie Fisher.
Services are in care of Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka.
