The first full week of August brings National Farmers Market Week. Along with it comes the bountiful harvest of ripe fruits and vegetables and other locally raised foods for your family’s table.
The S.D. Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) joins markets across the country in celebrating from Aug. 2-8, 2026. SDSPA encourages consumers to discover and attend one of the 45 markets in the state to support local food production in South Dakota.
National Farmers Market Week coincides with the season when the majority of local produce fully matures. This makes it the perfect time to revisit local food producers who consistently provide fresh, healthy products to their communities.
Over two decades ago National Farmers Market Week was declared in a proclamation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Championed by the Farmers Market Coalition, a nonprofit organization that supports farmers markets nationwide, this event promotes and advocates for farmers markets.
This annual celebration highlights the vital role farmers markets play in our nation’s food system. With fun events, programs, contests, activities, and more, the week helps to boost market attendance and visibility as well as showcase the value markets bring to their communities.

Market at the Meridian in Yankton is hosting their annual Kidpreneur Day, to celebrate the next generation of small business owners on Sat., Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Burke Area Farmers Market is excited to celebrate on Thurs., Aug. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. Visitors can look forward to homegrown, handmade, and homemade products, door prize drawings, and a photo booth.

The Brandon SD Farmers Market will celebrate on Sat., Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Customers can enter to win a give-a-way with vendor items and free face painting will be offered.

Main Street Market of Tyndall is hosting a Kids Market Night Tues., Aug. 11 from 4:30-6 p.m. where youth are invited to set up a free vendor booth to sell their handmade crafts, artwork, homegrown produce, or flowers.

The Miller Area Farmers Market will have drawings and kids activities during their Tues., Aug. 11th market from 5-7 p.m.

The Black Hills Farmers Market is hosting Senior Month throughout August. Seniors 65+ can stop by the information booth for a free $5 token to spend on a product during their Wednesday & Saturday markets in August from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
This week is about more than just fresh produce, it is a celebration of the farmers and local communities that keep our neighborhoods thriving. To support the farmers market industry, SDSPA manages a chapter, known as the S.D. Farmers Market Coalition. SDSPA members are invited to participate in this group which meets virtually throughout the year as an outlet to discuss needs and initiatives. The chapter provides networking opportunities, coordinates educational programming, and more.
