The Pierre Fire Department responded to a residential fire at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 28, 2026) in the 100 block of Hampton Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from a mobile home.
Firefighters located the fire at the rear of the home and initiated an interior attack, successfully stopping the fire’s forward progression.
“There was heavy smoke and some flames upon our arrival,” said Fire Chief Ian Paul. “We were able to knock the fire down shortly after making entry.”
No one was home at the time the fire was reported. Three adults and one child were displaced as a result of the fire. The residents were working with family members and the American Red Cross to arrange temporary accommodations. Unfortunately, multiple family pets did not survive the fire.
The home sustained heat damage to the rear portion of the structure, with smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home.
The fire originated inside the home in the area of the clothes dryer. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 1½ hours. The Pierre Fire Department was assisted by AMR, Fort Pierre Fire Department, Pierre emergency dispatchers, and local law enforcement.
