BOX ELDER, S.D. – The Pierre Governors will head into the upcoming postseason in Class 11AA with an unblemished 9-0 record after an 85-7 trouncing at Douglas Thursday night. Pierre amassed over 620 yards of total offense including over 420 of those on the ground. Porter Hunsley scored on two touchdown runs of 55 and 51 yards in the first half and finished with 118 yards on just three carries. Hayden Northrup also found paydirt twice on runs of 76 and 50 yards, leading the Govs with 145 on just four carries. Thomas Snyder, Brecken Fuhrman and freshman QB Thailand Johnson also registered touchdown runs. Jerren Deal threw for 143 yards and three short scores to Fuhrman, Snyder and Hudson Stoeser, all in the first half. Pierre also tacked on a Tony Klemann interception return and a punt return by EJ Rattling Leaf for scores, and the defense also registered a safety. Coach Steve Steele said that everyone who dressed, including a number of freshmen who were added to the roster after their season schedule came to end, were able to play and contribute to the win. Douglas, who was outmatched against all their 11AA opponents on the season, still hustled throughout the game, despite the score. The Patriots were able to find the end zone on a 30-yard scramble by senior QB Jack Koper early in the second half. The pairings for the postseason are now set, and the top-seeded Governors will host #8 Mitchell Thursday at 6:00 at Hollister Field. Coverage will begin at 5:25 on RIVER 92-7 FM, with video available at https://drgnews.com/river.
