Funeral services for Norma J. Johnson, 93, of Presho, SD will be 11:00 am Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Presho, SD with burial in the Presho Cemetery at Presho, SD. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Norma was born August 15, 1927 at home east of Kennebec to Minnie (Mundlien) and Bruce Herman. The family moved to the Hamill area and in 1938 moved to a ranch up from White River. She graduated from the West Edna Township Country School, south of Presho.
She went to live with a friend on her ranch for the summer allowing her to see the Black Hills and meet Gutson Borglum during the time he was carving Mt. Rushmore.
Norma returned home to the Presho area. She enjoyed attending dances in Vivian with her uncles Herman and Henry Mundlien. Norma met Myles Johnson and the two were married on February 1, 1946 at her parents’ home.
They made their home on a farm five miles northwest of Presho. Myles passed away on February 28, 1982 and Norma continued to manage the farm. In 1986, Norma moved into Presho.
Norma worked for the Aid Association for Lutherans raising money and helping with fundraising activities. Some of the things she helped with was putting Kidney Dialysis in the Burke Hospital, redoing the hall at Clearfield and helping to buy the Jaws of Life for the Presho Fire Department. She was also instrumental in many other fundraisers including the rehabilitation of the railroad line from Mitchell to Rapid City.
Norma traveled a lot, touring Europe, visiting her relatives in southern Germany, going to Australia and touring the eastern part and out to the rock. She toured Israel, went on a road trip to Alaska with her niece Gloria Marden, and touring all the states except the upper northeast.
Norma was very active in her church, teaching Sunday school, and when women were allowed to hold office on the church council, she was the first woman to serve there as secretary of the council.
Norma passed away on December 14, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Chamberlain at the age of 93 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her sister-in-law Twyla Herman; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Myles, parents Bruce and Minnie Herman, sister Marge Hutchison and husband Robert, and brother Ray Herman.
