Orville L. Anderson, 87, of Ft. Pierre formerly of Murdo died on Friday February 19th 2021 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 2:00pm in Murdo at the Harold Thune Auditorium. Due to health concerns the family requests that all of those in attendance wear a face covering. For those that are unable to attend the services they will be live streamed at the top of this page.
Orville Leroy Anderson was born on August 27th, 1933 to John and Alice (Matheny) Anderson at the family home in Kennebec, SD. He grew up and attended school in Kennebec. Orville joined the US Army and served over seas during the Korean War. After his time in the service he did spend a short time in Indiana where he met the love of his life Lola Stout. They moved to South Dakota and were married in Kennebec on April 18th 1960. What started out as a chance encounter at the Black Cat Cafe in Indiana between a guy from South Dakota and a girl from Indiana turned into a love story that lasted for over 60 years. Orville and Lola eventually made their home in Murdo where they raised their family. Orville devoted 55 plus years to Anderson Gas and Appliance and Anderson Heating & Cooling where he was able to turn good customers into great friends. Orville was a family man who loved his family and his community. He was honored to be chosen the 2019 Murdo Chamber of Commerce Community Volunteer of the year. If he wasn’t fishing or “checking in” with family or friends you could find Orville having coffee with the guys, telling a story with a good punchline. He was a member of American Legion Post 75 and Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo.
He is survived by his wife Lola of Ft. Pierre, SD, his son Douglas (Jennifer) of Pierre, SD, his daughters Diane (Cullan) Deis of Ft. Pierre, SD, and Dee (Rye) Anderson-Randa of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Daniall, Amanda, Christina, Morgan, Nathanael, Paige, Elaine and Charlei; six great-grandchildren Aubrie, Brianna, Roan, Wrangler, Treytan and Holtyn; three siblings Lucille, Laura, and Virginia along with numerous nieces and nephews who held special places in his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents and ten siblings Gladys, Mildred “Tootie”, Andy, Inger “Mitzie”, Mabel “Mick”, Opal, Gertrude “Gertie”, Gene, Lenora and Leo.
