HURON – Castlewood stayed unbeaten, White River’s star moved up the all-time scoring list, Ethan pulled off an incredible rally and Corsica-Stickney won a thriller in an exciting Thursday at the SDHSAA Class B Girls State Tournament at the Huron Arena.
Castlewood 61, Waverly-South Shore 55
Castlewood trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter as Waverly-South Shore hit seven three-pointers in the first half. But the top-seeded Warriors rallied. Alayna Benike led Castlewood (21-0) with 24 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Mackenzie Everson scored 17.
Emily Kranz scored 19 with 10 rebounds for Waverly-South Shore (16-5), who lost by nine points at Castlewood last month.
Ethan 52, Hanson 49
Ethan rallied from 19 points down to advance to Friday’s semifinal. Maddy Bartscher, who hit a three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to put the Rustlers ahead to stay, led Ethan (21-3) with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Mekiah Campbell scored 14 points with 16 rebounds for Hanson (19-4).
White River 65, Viborg-Hurley 53
Caelyn Valandra-Prue moved into ninth on the South Dakota girls’ basketball all-time scoring list with 31 points as White River (22-1) made its first state semifinal since 1992. Valandra-Prue now has 2,493 career points and needs just 14 more to move into eighth. She hit a three-pointer and had seven rebounds and five assists.
Maleighya Estes scored 15 with six rebounds for White River and Nicole Yackley had 12, all on three-pointers.
Nevaeh Ronke scored 14 points for Viborg-Hurley (18-5).
Corsica-Stickney 47, Herreid/Selby Area 45
Payton Delange hit a shot in the lane with nine seconds left to give the Jaguars (22-2) a dramatic win. Lauren Grage had tied the game 10 seconds earlier with a three-pointer for Herreid/Selby Area.
Raven Barse led Corsica-Stickney with 10 points. Rachael Fielder scored 14 and Grage had 13, each with three three-pointers, for Herreid/Selby Area (20-4).
