The US Department of Agriculture is increasing the amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits customers currently receive through September 2021.
USDA says the 15% increase provides an estimated $3.5 billion to households experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. In South Dakota, there are approximately 77,000 SNAP participants who will see an average monthly increase of $27 per person.
The funding comes from President Joe Biden’s recently passed American Rescue Plan.
