Lois Ellen (Burki) Hart, 90 crossed over to Heaven, Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota.
The family will honor her life with a private celebration at a later date.
Lois was born April 16, 1930 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Amber and Lloyd King. She was adopted as an infant by Albert and Sarah (Krull) Burki. She had one brother, Wayne Burki, and five sisters: Joyce Belanger, Iris Fear, Lorna Conway, Peggy Barker, and Carol Moats. Lois graduated from Highmore High School with the class of 1948 and then went to school in Spearfish, South Dakota to become a teacher. She taught for a short time at Banner and Pratt Rural Schools.
Her early childhood was spent on a farm south of Blunt, South Dakota. When she was 10, she and her family moved to the ranch where she would meet and fall in love with a handsome young cowboy, Richard (Dick) Hart, who came to buy a couple of horses from her father. They were married in 1952 and spent their married life on that same place farming, ranching and raising six children: Leo, Teresa “Sissy”, Julie, Janet, Ben and Lori. Lois loved her home and everything that came with that, especially all aspects of the ranching and farming operation. She loved to be involved and spent most of her younger years outside working side by side with Dick and later the kids. She loved and looked after all the animals, big and small.
She held several different jobs in the community, but the most recent ones were at Thunderbird Lanes and Hokie’s Station both in Highmore where she loved the people she worked with and enjoyed so much visiting with the customers that came and went. Later in life, one of her favorite things to do was mow on her riding lawn mower. She was concerned, just a few weeks ago, as to whether or not her mower would be ready to go for this season, so we are pretty sure that Heaven will now be mowed to perfection.
Lois is survived by her son, Leo Hart of the home place; daughters: Teresa “Sissy” Hart of Highmore, SD, Julie (Shane) Cowan of Pierre, SD, Janet (Chuck) Hoss, Goodwell, OK, and Lori (Craig) Latham, Goodwell, OK; grandchildren: Jade (Brittany) Cowan, Wellington, CO, Sunni Cowan (Alex Johnson) Buena Vista, CO, Chaney (Tyrel) Larsen, Weatherford, OK, Sadie Latham, Goodwell, OK; great grandchildren: Veda & Bennett Cowan and Charlie & Waylon Larsen; sisters: Peggy Barker, Huntington Beach, CA and Lorna Conway, Anaheim Hills, CA; and she also leaves behind many cherished friends and relatives.
She was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Dick; son, Benny; her parents: Albert & Sarah and Amber & Lloyd; her brother, Wayne; and sisters: Joyce, Iris and Carol; and many dear friends and relatives. Oh, what a joyous reunion it must be.
Her final resting place will be at the cross, overlooking home, thank you to all who shared in and were part of her life.
