7PM UPDATE:
Charges are pending against a 29 year old semi driver from Illinois after a chain reaction vehicle accident shortly after noon today (May 3) on Highway 14 about half way between Pierre and Blunt (12 miles east of Pierre, between the Hughes County water tower and Blunt).
South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan says Ashraf Ashurzoda from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was westbound in a 2018 Volvo semi tractor and trailer when he failed to stop for line of cars waiting for a pilot car in a construction zone, causing a chain reaction accident. Ashurzoda was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
The 69 year old male driver of the first vehicle hit– a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado– received serious, non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, then transferred to Sioux Falls. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The male driver of the second vehicle hit, a Dodge pickup, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. The 58 year old female driver of a Buick Enclave, the third vehicle hit, was taken by personal vehicle to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.
The accident remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

1:45PM UPDATE:
Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson says Central South Dakota Communications dispatch center at Pierre received a 911 call for a traffic accident on Highway 14 between the water tower and the Hwy14/83 junction about 12:06pm. The accident involved a semi pulling a trailer and several other vehicles.
People approaching the accident scene must slow down and be prepared to follow instructions of law enforcement– which may include being rerouted around the scene.
The accident is still an active investigation as of 1:45 pm. More information will be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Responding agencies are Hughes County Sheriff, Pierre Police, SD Highway Patrol, Blunt First Responders, AMR, Pierre Rural Fire and Pierre Fire.
