Bronze statues of South Dakota Govs. Charles Sheldon (2), Coe Crawford (6) and Carl Gunderson (11) were unveiled at the State Capitol in Pierre this morning (June 11).
Foundation Board president Rick Jensen says people in this state are known for successfully taking on challenges and the Trail of Governors celebrates that.
Gov. Kristi Noem reflected on some of the challenges overcome by her predecessors.
Sculptor James Michael Maher says he didn’t know much about Gov. Sheldon until he saw a photo.
Sculptors Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby created the Crawford statue. Leuning says Crawford was known for being a good speaker.
James Van Nuys created the bronze statue of Gov. Gunderson.
Today’s three bronze statues will be added to 25 statues already on the trail that begins at the Legion Cabin on the shores of Lake Sharpe, winding through downtown Pierre and the Capitol grounds.
The statues are funded by donations made to the trail’s foundation. Find out more at TrailofGovernors.com.
