Nearly 100 acres (97.7) burned when a wheat field caught fire about 5:30pm yesterday north of Pierre near the Hughes County and Sully County line.
Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department chief Doug Hinkle says a lot of units were on scene.
The Pierre and Fort Pierre area got around an inch of rain last week, but Hinkle says it’s still very dry.
When it’s as dry as it currently is in the area, Hinkle recommends being prepared for a fire to start when working in a field.
Yesterday’s fire burned some wheat stubble, standing wheat and a little bit of soybeans.
