Today (July 1) is the deadline for eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals in South Dakota to apply for an annual refund of their sales or property tax.
To be eligible, individuals must be at least 66 years old on or before January 1, 2019 or be disabled during any part of the year, be a South Dakota resident for the entire previous year and meet annual income requirements. The income limit for a single-member household is $12,490; the limit for a multiple-member household is $16,910. Refunds are calculated based on income.
AARP South Dakota State Director Erik Gaikowski says many of South Dakota’s seniors live on fixed incomes. He says this refund provides tax relief to some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens, making it easier for them to afford basic needs such as food, medicine and utilities.
Applications can be obtained online or by calling 1-800-829-9188 ext. 2 and should be submitted to the South Dakota Department of Revenue, Special Tax Division.
