The members of the Southeast Pierre Mission United Methodist Church have made the decision to end their weekly worship services at the end of February. The church was not provided a new pastor in 2019, when former Pastor Valerie Hummel LaBounty was transferred to a new community. Members of the church have been leading the services for the past 2-1/2 years to keep the church open. With a shortage of pastors in the Methodist conference, limited funding sources, and low attendance numbers at the weekly service, the members have chosen to close the church side of the facility.
The Southeast Community Center will continue to operate. The weekly Banquet meal will continue to operate as it has been, for the time being. An average of 300 meals are being served on a weekly basis, which shows the need for the program in our community. The Southeast Community Center also provides winter coats for those in need and helps with other services as needed. There is always a need for more groups and organizations to provide the weekly meals and volunteers to help serve those meals.
Work is being done to restructure the Board of Directors for the Southeast Community Center to make their role more effective and active. This will include electing new members to the board, revising the By-laws, setting new policies, and finding funding sources to keep the facility operating for years to come. If you have any interest in serving on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Community Center, please contact the Center at 605-494-0470.
The final Sunday service for the Southeast Pierre Mission United Methodist Church will be on February 27, 2022, at 10am, with a potluck luncheon to follow. The public is invited to attend the service and then share fellowship time at the meal.
