The City of Pierre is once again giving residential utility customers a coupon for a free load at the city solid waste facility.
Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says the city sends the coupons out annually to help residents with any cleanup they may be doing around their homes.
Each coupon entitles residential utility customers to the disposal of one small trailer or pickup-size load of waste. The coupons are intended for big items, so Pierre utility customers should continue to use garbage collection services for household waste. Residential utility customers who receive their utility bill electronically, should contact the solid waste facility to access a coupon.
The coupon’s value depends on how it’s used. The minimum charge for trash that comes across the scale at the city’s baling facility is $13.80 plus tax. The minimum charge for rubble is $8.70 plus tax. A pick-up or small trailer load could easily carry more than the minimum charge, so using the coupon could save someone $20 or more.
The solid waste department also offers recycling programs for paint, bicycles, electronics and light bulbs and sells crushed asphalt and yard compost.
The coupons are valid through November 30, 2022.
The City of Pierre’s solid waste facility processes all non-recycled solid waste collected in Pierre, Fort Pierre, Onida, Agar, Midland, Miller, Highmore and Huron, as well as Hughes, Hand and Hyde Counties. In total, that amounts to about 24-thousand tons of trash each year. Once baled at Pierre’s solid waste facility, that garbage is disposed of at the regional landfill site outside of Pierre.
