WATERTOWN – Ever since winning in the SoDak 16 as an 11th seed, the Viborg-Hurley Cougars had been the surprise in this postseason in Class B girls basketball. Now, they are champions.
Viborg-Hurley rallied from an eight-point second half deficit Saturday to defeat De Smet 58-53 in the championship game of the SDHSAA Class B Girls State Tournament at Watertown Civic Arena.
Down 44-36 in the third quarter, the Cougars (22-4) then put together a 17-3 run. Coral Mason scored eight points during the run. She scored 19 with nine rebounds. Denae Mach led Viborg-Hurley with 23 points.
Kennadi Buchholz and Emma Albrecht each scored 15 points for De Smet (24-2). Buchholz also had 21 rebounds.
Viborg-Hurley is a first-time girls state champion. De Smet won the title in 2019.

3rd Place – Corsica-Stickney 75, Faith 50
Rachel Gerlach led four double-figure scorers for Corsica-Stickney (22-4). Payton DeLange had 15 points, Morgan Crites scored 12. Avery Broughton had 11 with 15 rebounds.
Kaycee Groves scored 15 for Faith (19-7).
5th Place – Aberdeen Roncalli 44, Aberdeen Christian 34
Roncalli outscored Aberdeen Christian 19-8 in the third quarter to extend a two-point halftime lead. Morgan Fielder scored 16 for Roncalli (24-2).
Joy Rohrbach and Grace Kaiser each scored 11 for Aberdeen Christian (21-5).
