Memorial services for Delbert “Bud” Ackerman, 85, of Selby will be at 11 AM, Saturday, July 11, 2026, at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby. Inurnment will be at Selby Memorial Gardens. Bud passed away Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Walworth County Care Center in Selby. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
Delbert “Bud” Ackerman was born on September 24, 1940, in Campbell County to John and Hulda (Holzwarth) Ackerman. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Mound City. Bud attended country school and Herreid High School, graduating in 1958. Delbert married Phyllis Bauer on June 14, 1959, at the Hoffnungstal Lutheran Church, rural Eureka. They made their home in Selby ever since.
Bud worked for Phillip 66 in Selby from 1958 to 1965, before starting his career with the State Highway Department in April of 1965. He worked his way up in the department over the years and retired in December of 1999 as the superintendent of maintenance. After retirement Bud kept himself busy helping his brother, Melvin, on the farm, being Selby’s handyman, running Bud’s Fix-it and driving bus for 22 years. When Bud was younger he enjoyed playing softball. Bud and Phyllis also enjoyed watching bull riding and played in the same card club for 60 years.
Bud is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis of Selby, daughter, Nadine (Dale) Hoyt, of Dickinson, ND, son, Kyle (Cindy) of Selby, 6 grandchildren, Cory, Jon, Amy, Angel, Alisha, and Anna, 9 great grandchildren, brother, Melvin (Eva) Ackerman, of Mound City, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kenneth Ackerman.
