
EAGLE BUTTE, SD – Denton C. Shaving-Herrald, 29, of Eagle Butte, passed away, Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Sanford Hospital, Bismarck, ND.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. MDT, Monday, June 1, 2026, at Tiospaye Topa School, LaPlant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, LaPlant. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2026, with a procession from 2-Mile east of LaPlant at 4:00 p.m.
Denton Charles Shaving was born on February 10, 1997, to Sonya Jean Shaving and the late Victor Herrald Jr. in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. He was the baby brother of 11 siblings: Waushara Tapio, Jeannie LeClaire, Rodney Shaving, Patrick Tapio, Markus Laundreaux, Marisa Landreaux, Chelsey Herrald, Kelsie Herrald, Jocelyn Fast Horse, Stephanie Herrald, and Vaughn Herrald. His special cousins are Alicia Fast Horse and Jolene Samuelson.
Denton grew up and lived in Eagle Butte his whole life. He attended school in Eagle Butte, SD from kindergarten all the way through high school and graduated in 2015. During his high school years, he enjoyed playing basketball and hanging out with friends. He was a very humble and caring person. He would give a person the shirt off his shoulder when in need. He had very little and didn’t expect anything from anyone. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was currently employed at Prairie Knights Casino in North Dakota at the time of his passing. He enjoyed working for the casino and meeting new people.
In 2016, he welcomed his mini-me, a son, Dexton Allen Shaving, and in 2019 he welcomed a daughter, Maleigha Jay Shaving. He loved and thought of everyone, especially his children Dexton and Maleigha, as well as his siblings and mother. Denton was a kind, respectful, and compassionate man whose presence brought comfort to those around him. He was known for his steady character, his willingness to help others, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life.
Denton is survived by his children, Dexton and Maleigha Shaving; mother, Sonya Shaving; siblings: Waushara (Dominic) Tapio, Jeannie (Derek) LeClaire, Rodney Shaving, Patrick Tapio, Markus Laundreaux, Marisa Landreaux, Chelsey Herrald, Kelsey Herrald, Stephanie Herrald, Jocelyn Fast Horse, Vaughn Herrald; aunts: Voleeda Seth, Jennie LeBeau, Rita Shaving; uncle, Michael Shaving; nieces: Daecia Bartlett, Amiyah Bridwell, twinnies Kaylianna and Darianna Shaving, Hailey Tapio, Jae Tapio, D’jai Shaving; nephews: Bryant Bartlett, Jace Bridwell, Kayle Bridwell, Ayden Parrish; grandchildren: Evan and Kenley; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Herald Jr.; maternal grandparents, Paul and Grace Shaving; uncles: Charles Shaving, Gerald “Jaws” Shaving, Francis Shaving; cousins: Tisha Shaving, Tonia Shaving, Randy Swimmer; nephews: Zane Tapio, Marcus High Elk Jr., J’Den Shaving; childhood friends: Cole Brings Plenty, Austin Miner, Jordan Mesteth, Darian Lee Reddog, Kyzier Dauphinais, and Candelaria Peralta.
