Gideon Schuh, 99, Bowdle, died Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at the Bowdle Hospital.
Gideon Jacob Schuh, son of Matilda (Schmidt) and Jacob Schuh, was born at Light Cap, SD, between Isabel, SD and McIntosh, SD, on May 25, 1927. In 1936, the family relocated to a farm south of Artas, SD. In 1939, the Schuh’s moved to a farm four miles SW of Bowdle. Gideon attended rural schools through the 8th grade. He attended Bowdle High School, graduating with the Class of 1944. He then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD for one year and completed his formal education at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Gideon served his country in the United States Army, being inducted January 12, 1951. Following his honorable discharge on January 11, 1953, he returned to Bowdle. He and his brother Alvin worked the family farm in partnership for many years. In the 1970’s, Alvin’s son Kenny joined them in the partnership. Gideon later purchased a hay grinder and did custom work until 1991, when he retired. Gideon helped Kenny on the farm until Kenny’s untimely death on September 25, 2017. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and taught Sunday school for many years. Gideon was a member of the Bowdle American Legion Post No. 264, served on the Edmunds County Conservation Board, the Edmunds County FHA Board, Edmunds County Crop Improvement Association, and served the Bowdle School District as treasurer for 12 years. Gideon was well known for his woodworking ability.
Gideon is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob, on May 16, 1979; his mother, Matilda, on October 12, 1999; two brothers, Alvin and Harold; and one sister, Florence Gramm.
Gideon’s funeral will be livestreamed at the Lien Family Funeral Care Facebook page.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, September 14, 2026 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bowdle, led by Pastor Tony Hansen. Interment follows at the Bowdle City Cemetery with military rites by the Bowdle Legion Post. Organist will be Cindy Hansen; Congregational Hymns will be “I Know that My Redeemer Lives”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Children of the Heavenly Father”, and “Jesus Lives, The Victories Won”, and usher will be Mark Bieber.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday.
Honorary bearers will be Judy Haberer of Bowdle and the Bowdle Nursing Home Staff.
Casketbearers will be Jerrad Hoffman and Jeremy Hoffman of Bowdle; Bryan Haberer of Gettysburg, SD; Jordan Schuh of Madison, SD; Stuart Sipma of Bismarck, ND; and Jon Ellwein of Barnard, SD.
Services are in care of Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
