Memorial services for James Pothast, 56, of Spearfish will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Inurnment will be at the Dupris Family Cemetery. James passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Monument Health Hospital in Spearfish.
James Edward Pothast was born on April 7, 1969, to William and Patricia Pothast at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD. Jimmy was the youngest of three children. He started school in Eagle Butte, then onto Sioux Falls for several years. In 1986, he moved to Northern Hills Training Center in Spearfish, SD. This is where he remained.
He visited home south of Eagle Butte several times a year. Jimmy enjoyed riding in the pickup when we bed cows. In later years he really enjoyed riding in the side by side.
Jimmy is survived by his mother Patricia Pothast, sister Katharine Pothast, brother Lee Pothast, nieces Jaimie Pothast, Ashley Pothast, and Kaitlin Pothast, four great nieces, and two great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father William Pothast, paternal grandparents Ronald and Anna, Marie Pothast, and his maternal grandparents Hermas and Lois Tindell.
