FT. PIERRE, SD – John Hillmer, 82, of Fort Pierre, SD passed away on September 19, 2026 at Avera Missouri River Health Care in Gettysburg, SD.
Funeral service will be 11:00AM on Friday, September 25, 2026 at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre.
Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Blunt, SD.
John Jay Hillmer Jr. was born March 13th, 1944 in Yakima, Washington to John Sr. and Margarette (Tiny) Hillmer. John grew up in Blunt, and attended Pleasant View Country School through eighth grade in Canning and Riggs High School.
John married his forever love, Jean Crain July 2nd 1965 in Blunt, SD. To this 60 year union brought three daughters; Kim (Roger) Weber, Tammy (Aaron) Rose, Susan Taylor & Randy Taylor. John was a proud grandpa and great grandpa to Amber (Nick) Lein son Lane, Tanner Green, Tyson Green children Mila and Mickey, Emily Rose, Dillon (Danielle) Taylor sons Lincoln & Noah, Sydnie Taylor.
John worked a variety of Jobs including farm and ranch hand, carpentry, coal mines, construction, and eventually settling in at Stanley Co. Highway Department for 21yrs until his semi-retirement. John worked hard, but enjoyed life. He loved playing horse shoe in his younger years, wood working making several keep sakes, camping, fishing, hunting with friends and family and was a proud member of the Moose Lodge since 1976. His pride and joy was tending to his yard and garden. John and Jean loved their little home on the bad river where they hosted many celebrations.
John is survived by his three children, Kim, Tammy, & Susan. His only living sibling Dick (Lila) Hillmer. In-laws, Karen (Don) Tassler, Ron (Carol) Crain. His 6 grand kids, 5 great grandkids, and serval nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his Wife Jean, Siblings Betty and husband Alvin Millard, Shirley and husband Paul Bergeson, Janice Kilbourn, Nephew Corky Bergeson, Brother in law Ed Crain, and In-laws Harry and Ila Crain.
