Joseph Cary | 1953 - 2026

PIERRE, SD – Joseph (Joe) Cary was born on August 15, 1953 in Gettysburg, South Dakota to Clark and Elinor (Unruh) Cary. Joe grew up in Onida, South Dakota where he attended Kindergarten- 12th grade. While in High school Joe was the student manager for the basketball team when they went to state. Joe was also a part of all state chorus. After graduating from Sully Buttes High School, he went on to Huron College where he studied history. His lifelong nickname was “Flash” due to his bright red hair!

 

After college Joe moved to Pierre where he bartended at many different establishments in the area. Joe also worked for the state of South Dakota, Game Fish and Parks for many years first planting trees for 3-4 summers and then moved to game fish and parks licensing office for 10 years. Joe liked to keep busy so recently he would substitute teach in the Pierre school district and then also worked for the City or Pierre in the summers.

 

Joe loved all sports, But Football was his favorite, his favorite NFL team was the Raiders, and his favorite College team was the Nebraska Corn Huskers. Joe also was a big Boston Celtic and a Red Sox fan. He was very passionate about his fantasy football league. He always looked forward to going to the bowling alley to watch and meet up with friends. He was also an avid reader. His favorite books to read were history and geography. He loved nonfiction books the most. He enjoyed learning the geographic significance of historical events. He always had several library books on hand at any given time as the librarians knew him by name. Joe also enjoyed music, he liked going to concerts and playing the guitar.

 

Joe is survived by, his mother, Elinor (Cary) Gerstenecker, his brother Ken Cary and his sister June (Cary) Classen. Nephews; Dustin Byrum (Reagan), Jesse LaCasse (Tiffany), and Jake LaCasse. Niece; Crystal Byrum- Frost (Daniel). Great Nephews, Brayden and Lincoln Byrum, Jace Frost and Brekken LaCasse. Great Nieces, Bryce Marie Frost Abrahim (Hassim), and Kambree LaCasse. Many cousins, and lifelong friends from over the years.

 

Joe is preceded in death by 2 sisters; Donna (Gerstenecker) LaCasse and Charlotte Cary. His father, step-father aunts, uncles and cousins.
