PIERRE, SD – Lillian Mae Magnusson, 91, of Pierre, South Dakota passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, July 10, 2026 at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre.
Lillian was born on May 22, 1935, to Elmer LaRoche and Helen Marshall in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. When she was 7, the family moved to Pierre where her mother later married Chet Tegland. They moved to Arizona, Washington, and Oregon before settling back in Pierre where she graduated High School. In November 1956 she married George L Magnusson and to that union two children were born: William “Bill” and Wanda.
Lillian worked for St. Mary’s Hospital for many years as well as K-Mart and Yellow Canopy. Her last job was as a payroll loan officer at Advance America where she made many friends. Lillian served as a commissioner for 25 years on the Pierre Housing and Redevelopment Commission.
Lillian loved her family and her home. She could often be found curled up in her chair reading a book or the latest celebrity gossip magazine with a rerun of Gunsmoke playing in the background. She was remembered by many for her quick wit and feisty personality. She looked forward to her frequent coffee and lunch visits with her daughter, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Lillian is survived by her children: William (Jackie) Magnusson of Mt. Home, ID, and Wanda (Clayton) Boyle of Pierre, SD, grandchildren: Lacie (Jon) Herman, Jamie (Dusin) Boe, Terri (Zach) Geigle of Pierre, SD, Kristie (Eric) Garcia and Jason Chipman of Mt. Home, ID, 13 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren (with one more on the way), and numerous cousins.
Lillian was preceded in death by her Father Elmar LaRoche, Step-Father Chet Tegland, Mother Helen Tegland as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
