Memorial services for Steven Vilhauer, 72, of Herreid will be at 10 AM, Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Herreid Baptist Church. Steve passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Steven Lee Vilhauer was born July 10, 1954, to Ernest and Tillie Vilhauer. He grew up on the family farm. Steve attended Herreid school, graduating in 1972 . He remained on the family farm farming with his father and brother until retirement in 2013. He married Michelle Hargis on June 30, 1979. Together they had two children Heidi (Keegan) Richards, Steven (Andrea) Vilhauer, and three grandchildren Molly, Tessa, and Henrik.

Steve enjoyed muscle cars, playing horseshoes, golfing, fishing, hunting, bowling, and pinochle, but mostly these were avenues to do what he loved most which was to visit, tell stories, and spend time with his family. He was a lifelong Vikings and Twins fan but also enjoyed all kinds of sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Tillie Vilhauer, brother Darvin, niece Nola, and father-in-law Jerry Hargis.

He is survived by his wife Michelle, children Heidi and Keegan Richards, Steven and Andrea Vilhauer, three grandchildren Molly, Tessa, and Henry, sister-in-law Marilyn Vilhauer, mother-in-law Barbara Hargis, and many extended family members.
