Gov. Kristi Noem doesn’t expect the number of infections to peak until the end of May or early June.
So far, 34 people in South Dakota have recovered after contracting the coronavirus. There’s been one death. That was a Pennington County resident who died in Davison County and was one of the first cases reported in the state.
The one COVID-19 case in Hughes County is in an inmate at the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre. Last week state officials said the inmate was isolated and doing well.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. Older adults and people with existing health problems are among those particularly susceptible to more severe illness, including pneumonia.
