The number of calls to the Pierre Police Department complaining about fireworks is up significantly this year over last year.
The Pierre City Commission allowed residents to launch fireworks in town on private property this year only on July 3 and 4 between the hours of 10am-11:59pm.
Police captain Bryan Walz says as of last night (Wed.), they’ve received 65 complaints and issued two citations. They received 12 complaints in 2019 and 16 complaints in 2018.
Larry Lantz lives on Park Street and told the city commission at this week’s (July 7) meeting many Pierre residents didn’t obey the rules.
Fireworks were supposed to be ignited on private property, but Lantz says many didn’t follow that restriction either.
Lantz says he isn’t usually bothered by loud noises.
Mayor Steve Harding said allowing fireworks to be shot off within Pierre city limits was a one time thing.
All debris was supposed to be cleaned up by the user of the fireworks by 10pm July 5.
