The Verendrye Museum in Fort Pierre will hold its annual Backyard BBQ Saturday, August 15 at Fischer’s Lilly Park.
The event is open to anyone who wants to bring their grill down to compete. The brisket was donated by the SD Beef Council and participants prepare the beef with their special recipes. Prizes will be awarded for the top three winners. In 2019, there were 22 contestants serving meals to more than 150 people and A-G-E Corporation of Fort Pierre took 1st place.
The Calcutta will be at noon. The public is encouraged to attend the early testing and judging of the People’s Choice award from 3-4:30pm. At 5pm, the BBQ Brisket dinner with all the fixings will start. Cost is $10 per person. Kids eight years old and under are free. Soft drinks, water and adult beverages will be available for sale. As an added convenience, carry-out will be available for food.
Verendrye Museum Board President Deb Schiefelbein says sponsorships offset the costs of the event. Profits go toward the renovation/operations of the Verendrye Museum, the Log Cabin Visitor Center, Stanley County Jail, Sansarc Country School Museum and Fort Pierre Depot in Fort Pierre.
The public is encouraged to wear masks and organizers will be practicing social distancing as a preventative COVID-19 measure. Some seating is available in the park, but people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Sponsor forms and participant forms are available at www.verendryemuseum.com or by contacting Deb Schiefelbein at 605-224-4830 debschiefelbein@gmail.com or Connie Carlisle, Board Member, 605-223-2042, conniecarlisle@outlook.com.
