The South Dakota Governor’s Residence in Pierre will be getting a fence, but it won’t be entirely at taxpayer expense.
Gov. Kristi Noem spokeswoman Maggie Seidel says it’s no secret there are people who don’t like some of the decisions the Governor has made during this COVID-19 pandemic, and otherwise. She says, “In America, we debate issues; we don’t turn to violence. But it only takes one, and per the Governor’s security team, putting up a fence around the residence is critical at this time.”
Seidel says there are a number of South Dakotans, many of whom supported the construction of the Governor’s Residence, who have told them they’d support the fence construction project. She says while this won’t cover the entire cost, their generosity will help reduce the bill for taxpayers and will help ensure the design is suitable for the Capitol Complex grounds.
A 2019 proposal to surround the Governor’s Residence with a fence came with a price tag of $400,000.
