Five Native American schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation will not have fall sports for at least the start of the school year. Pine Ridge, Red Cloud, Little Wound, Crazy Horse and Lakota Tech will all have at least nine weeks of online distance learning. The reservation has had a shelter-in-place ordinance in effect since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March. Schools are hoping to have a chance to submit plans for small group learning, and the chance of having some of the fall sports season, about nine weeks into the school year.
Among other Native American schools:
- Cheyenne Eagle-Butte and St. Francis Indian cancelled fall sports.
- Tiospaye Topa has suspended all extracurricular activities until a final decision is to be made on September 18.
- Crow Creek will have flex learning for the first nine weeks of school and has postponed fall sports.
- Todd County has suspended extracurricular activities as long as there is no in-person learning.
- Takini has chosen not to participate in fall sports, as of now.
- Flandreau Indian School will not offer fall sports and have online learning to begin the year.
- McLaughlin, Wakpala, Lower Brule, Tiospa Zina and Marty all plan to offer fall sports.
