The Hughes County Commission has approved a settlement in its lawsuit against the design firm in charge of a 2014 upgrade to the county Courthouse’s heating system.
The original project involved converting the courthouse’s steam system to a new hydronic heating system. When the project was finished in November of 2014, the new system was not appropriately heating several rooms and areas within the Courthouse.
After repeated attempts to remedy the ongoing heating issues, an independent engineering firm was hired to fix the problems. The remedial project cost was approximately $288-thousand ($287,111.98).
In May of 2019, the Hughes County Commission filed a lawsuit for breach of contract and professional negligence against the original design firm. After months of discussion, both parties have determined a settlement of $250-thousand payable to Hughes County was a fair resolution.
The Hughes County Courthouse was originally constructed in 1935.
