KNOXVILLE, TN – Aberdeen native Josh Heupel is the new football head coach at the University of Tennessee.
Heupel replaces Jeremy Pruitt, who was fired by the school on January 18 during an investigation into possible NCAA violations by the Volunteer program.
Heupel was the South Dakota Player of the Year in 1995, his senior season at Aberdeen Central. After starting his college career at Weber State, Heupel quarterbacked Snow College before joining Oklahoma, where he led the Sooners to an unbeaten national championship in 2000 and was second in Heisman Trophy voting to Florida State’s Chris Weinke. After stints as an assistant coach at Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah State and Missouri, Heupel became the head coach at Central Florida in 2018 and led UCF to a 12-1 season. Heupel was 28-8 in three seasons at UCF.
