(DRG Media Group News and Farm with information from the Associated Press)– A South Dakota lawmaker pushing a bill to require Gov. Kristi Noem to disclose the amount of taxpayer-funds used for her travel security says she’s faced a pressure campaign to kill the proposal.
Rep. Taffy Howard says she faced text message attacks and fellow Republicans rescinding support after hearing from the governor’s office. Howard says the proposed legislation (HB1089) would require future costs to be disclosed, but would also be applied retroactively to Noem’s security costs during her travel across the country on behalf of former President Donald Trump and other Republicans.
Noem has refused to disclose how much it costs to send Highway Patrol troopers with her as she traveled.
Howard argues it would not compromise safety to know how much is spent on travel security.
