PIERRE – When the Pierre Governors host the Brookings Bobcats Thursday at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium, there will be quite a lot at stake. The winner will have at least the second seed in the 11AA playoffs, meaning the possibility of two home games instead of just one. Also, the ESD championship will go to the winner.
This will be the first meeting between the schools since Pierre’s 38-6 win over Brookings last November at the DakotaDome. That win gave the Governors their fourth consecutive 11AA championship.
Pierre is averaging 418 yards and 38 1/2 points per game. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has passed for 30 touchdowns and rushed for eight. Head Coach Steve Steele said that when the Governors’ offense is right, it’s hard to stop.
In the last three games, Pierre has scored 165 points, but Steele isn’t expecting such a wide-open offensive game against Brookings.
Steele said that if the game isn’t so wide-open, the Governor offense can adjust.
When Pierre’s defense has had to perform well, Steele said it has done so.
Steele is impressed with Brookings.
According to Steele, a multi-score lead early would be a big advantage for Pierre.
Steele said that one thing will be very important in this game for the Governors.
Pierre will host Brookings Thursday and coverage will begin at 5:30 on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7. Live and archived video will be available at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app and drgnews.com. Brian Oakland will call the action.
