The funeral service for long-time Hyde County Sheriff Mike Volek will be held tonight (Nov. 12, 2021) at 7:30pm at the Hyde County Auditorium in Highmore.
Volek served the residents of Hyde County as a law enforcement officer for 46 years, working as a city police officer in Highmore and as a Hyde County deputy sheriff prior to becoming sheriff.
Volek was a fire fighter and an EMT with the ambulance service. He started with the Highmore Volunteer Fire Department in September of 1981 and retired from Fire Service in December of 2016. He was an EMT since March of 1986.
A statement from his family says over the years Volek touched countless lives with acts of kindness, caring and compassion. He was a private man who lived a life of public service and genuinely cared for every person he was of service to.
Diane Deis of Fort Pierre remembers being pulled over for speeding and Mike issuing her a ticket, which she states she deserved. Deis had her teenage daughter in the car, who was on her cellphone, but Volek took the time to point out to the girl that being in the car with her mom during a long drive was a wonderful opportunity to have conversations. He told her to take advantage of that opportunity and have some quality time.
Sheriff Bill Stahl of Sully County was quoted as saying in a recent interview that it was characteristic of Volek to go beyond what is expected when helping members of the public he encountered in the line of duty. “He’d do anything for anyone,” said Stahl.
