FINAL UPDATE DECEMBER 6, 2021:
The annual Tyler Wilcox Memorial Guns n’ Hoses Blood Drive wrapped up in Pierre/Fort Pierre Saturday afternoon (Dec. 4, 2021) having collected 510 units of blood.
The blood drive began when Tyler told his parents Bob and Jeri “he wanted to pay pack all the kindness and generosity shown to him by blood donors” during his three year fight with cancer. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 19.
Jeri Wilcox says Tyler would’ve loved the friendly competition between Team Guns and Team Hoses.
Vitalant senior donor recruitment representative Abbie Arneson says with each unit being able to impact up to three people, up to 1530 lives could be affected by this year’s event.
Arneson says they knew 515 was an ambitious goal, but she’s not surprised we came so close to hitting it.
Team Hoses was the winner, 251 to 238 over Team Guns.
UPDATE AFTERNOON DECEMBER 4, 2021:
Team Hoses has taken back the title of champions of the Tyler Wilcox Memorial Guns and Hoses Blood Drive 251 to 238 over Team Guns.
Because some people are able to donate double red cells, 510 units of blood were collected toward this year’s goal of 515 units. With each unit being able to impact up to three donors, that’s up to 1530 lives that could be affected.
This year’s blood drive added a fourth day and Vitalant senior donor recruitment representative Abbie Arneson says it made a difference.

He used over 200 units of blood during his cancer battle and wanted to do something to pay the generosity forward.

The two day total is 281 units of blood.
Vitalant senior donor recruitment representative Abbie Arneson explains why this year’s goal is 515.
People who have never donated blood often give the reason that nobody has ever asked them to donate. Arneson says, she’s asking you to.
She says whatever the reason someone needs blood, the supply needs to be on the shelves.
Arneson says this blood drive is a fun, life saving event.
The blood drive continues today until 6pm and tomorrow from 7:30am-12:30pm at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre.
This blood drive was inspired by Tyler’s battle with cancer and area residents are fighting that same battle every day. She says you can find more information and schedule an appointment to donate by going to www.vitalant.org/tylerwilcox.
