Close call after spark from burning garbage starts grass fire west of Fort Pierre

Luckily no structures were damaged when a fire in a burn barrel sparked a grass fire at Don Engleman’s place west of Fort Pierre late yesterday morning (Feb. 7, 2022).

Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Tye Odden says once a spark got away, the fire popped up quickly.

While many of us may be enjoying the unseasonably mild temperatures, Odden says without moisture the risk of a fire spreading remains high.
