This week (Feb. 22, 2022), the Pierre City Commission approved using federal CARES dollars to buy a new multi-purpose plow for the airport.
Pierre Regional Airport Manager Cameron Howard says the $634,000 piece of equipment is essential for snow removal and deicing operations. He says they won’t actually get the new plow until next year because it takes the manufacturer about a year to build it to the City’s specs.
The new plow is replacing a similar unit that’s 27 years old. The 1995 plow was starting to show signs of age and was scheduled for replacement this year.
The Pierre Regional Airport received three separate federal COVID related grants totaling $3.2 million. Only one of those grants can be used for major equipment purchases. The remaining funds are required to be used for operations.
