The TeamMates Mentoring Program started at Georgia Morse Middle School in Pierre a year ago. To help celebrate the first anniversary, program CEO DeMoine Adams spent a day at the school this week (March 2, 2022).
TeamMates began in 1991 with the vision of University of Nebraska Cornhuskers Head Football Coach Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy. DeMo– who earned the first of his multiple degrees in just three years– participated in the program while playing for Osborne from 1999-2002.
In one word, DeMo says TeamMates mentors give the mentees hope.
TeamMates provides training for mentors and mentees, who are then matched according to their similar interests. The matched pairs meet at the school once a week, where mentors serve as a “cheerleader” for the student– not a teacher, parent or other authority figure.
TeamMates has grown to include programs in 180 communities in five states.
