PIERRE – Pierre Governor wrestlers Ciara McFarling and Deegan Houska are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 26.
McFarling won her second consecutive state championship at 285 pounds and helped the Governors win the first girls wrestling team championship. McFarling, a freshman, was 35-2 this season. Head Coach Matt Thorson said of McFarling: “The scariest thing is that Ciara is full of untapped potential. She is still learning, and we have only seen glimpses of what she is going to do for the next 3 years. She is always in high spirits and never takes anything too seriously. She doesn’t get effected by nerves or big moments, she just loves to go out there and wrestle. The best is yet to come!”
Houska, wrestling through injuries the entire season, was the runner-up at 152 pounds, losing to Corter Doney of Rapid City Stevens 7-5 in the championship match. Head Coach Shawn Lewis spoke of Houska’s effort: “We knew Houska was battling through injuries in order to be there for his team. He had torn meniscus in his knee and a torn labrum in his shoulder. Without the proper mindset and toughness this does not happen. Deegan showed extraordinary guts and resolve over the course of the season to be there for his team.”
