A 34 year old man from Fort Thompson convicted of Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender has received his penalty from a federal U.S. District Court judge.
Richard Coleman, Jr., was sentenced to sixteen months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on July 22, 2020, in Fort Thompson, in which Coleman threw a can at his significant other, striking her in the chest. At the time of the domestic assault, Coleman had at least two prior convictions for offenses that would have been, if subject to federal jurisdiction, an assault against a spouse or intimate partner.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, Crow Creek Agency.
Coleman was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
