RAPID CITY – Sioux Falls’ newest public high school basketball program has already proven it belongs.
Taliyah Hayes hit a go-ahead shot with 1:21 left as part of a game-ending 11-0 run as Jefferson stunned defending state champion Washington Thursday 47-43 at the Ice Arena at the Monument in the first round of the SDHSAA Girls AA State Tournament.
Jefferson will play Rapid City Stevens in the semifinals on Friday. The Raiders held off Rapid City Central 40-34.
O’Gorman held down Sioux Falls Lincoln and Brandon Valley held off Harrisburg.
SF Jefferson 47, SF Washington 43
Washington was held scoreless for the last 3:49 as eighth-seeded Jefferson rallied. Cierra Watkins led Jefferson (12-10) with 16 points. Jaidyn Dunn scored 12 with 11 rebounds. Aliyah McGovern-Harrington scored 12 for Jefferson.
Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda led Washington (20-2) with 19 points. Alexus Motley scored nine.
Rapid City Stevens 40, Rapid City Central 34
Macey Wathan scored 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter for Stevens (18-4). Wathen hit five three-pointers. Bailey Sobczak had eight points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.
Sadie Glade led Central (16-6) with 11 points.
Stevens was held to 32 percent shooting, but forced 23 turnovers.
O’Gorman 55, Sioux Falls Lincoln 35
O’Gorman stifled Lincoln, shooting 50 percent and forcing 20 turnovers.
Hannah Ronsiek led the Knights (19-3) with 18 points and eight steals. Kira Mentele scored 10.
Mariah Siem scored nine for Lincoln (10-12).
Brandon Valley 43, Harrisburg 39
Brandon Valley used its strong inside game to hang on. Kylie Foss led the Lynx (18-4) with 16 points and six rebounds. Hilary Behrens had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Harrisburg (9-13), held to 29 percent shooting, had 16 points and 15 rebounds from Emilee Boyer.
