SIOUX FALLS – The Oahe Capitals’ power play came through just when needed.
Keenan Howard scored a game-winning power play goal, the Capitals’ second of the game, with just under four minutes left in the second period Friday. Oahe held on for a 5-3 win over the Aberdeen Cougars in the first round of the SDAHA Boys Varsity State Tournament at SCHEELS IcePlex.
Jarron Beck gave the Capitals their first goal on the power play just over five minutes into the game. After Jacob Scheel scored for Aberdeen, Ashton Griese put Oahe back on top with 5:01 left in the first period.
Oahe’s lead was 3-1 with a Barrett Schweitzer goal almost four minutes into the second period before Phillip Zens and Scheel tied the game for the Cougars.
Carter Sanderson scored his 27th goal of the season with 3:44 left in the third period to give the Capitals a two-goal lead.
Carter Schulz made 24 saves for the Capitals (14-7).
Oahe will meet Rushmore Saturday in the semifinal round at 7:05 PM.
