VERMILLION – Eric Peterson is the new men’s basketball head coach at South Dakota.
Peterson was an assistant for Craig Smith from 2014-18. The Coyotes won their first Summit League championship in 2017 and made the title game of the Summit League tournament in 2018 while winning 26 games.
Peterson then followed Smith to Utah State for the next three seasons, and then to Utah this season. Utah State qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all three of the seasons Peterson was on the coaching staff.
Peterson was previously a head coach in junior college at Williston State College from 2012-14.
He replaces Todd Lee, who was fired last week after four seasons. The Coyotes were 19-12 this past season and lost in the Summit League Tournament semifinal.
