SIOUX FALLS – The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame named its 2022 class on Tuesday. 15 new inductees will be celebrated in a banquet and induction ceremony on Sunday, September 25 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.
2022 South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame Inductees
- Alan Miller, Dakota Wesleyan’s all-time leading basketball scorer and Class B state champion with Stickney
- Janel Birrenkott, basketball standout at Northern State and with USA Deaf Team
- Bryan Brewer, Pine Ridge coach and administrator who helped create Lakota Nation Invitational
- Jill Christensen, winningest South Dakota high school volleyball coach
- Doug Clark, flagman for America’s highest-profile sprint car races
- Dr. Kathie Courtney, pioneer in athletic training
- Gary Evjen, first South Dakota college basketball player to have at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (Northern State)
- Gene Johnson, outstanding distance runner and coach
- Dave Krauth, Augustana women’s basketball head coach
- Megan Mahoney, four-time all-star player at Sturgis who later played in the WNBA
- Bill Matthews, football player at South Dakota State who late played in the NFL and USFL
- Tom Rudebusch, longtime voice of South Dakota Mines and Rapid City Post 22 legion baseball
- Jeff Schemmel, first native South Dakotan to break the four-minute mile
- Paul Tierney, member of the National Rodeo Hall of Fame
- Vince Whipple, long time West River coach and basketball star at Huron College
