Hannah Sjerven became the first University of South Dakota women’s basketball player to be selected in the WNBA Draft Monday when she was chosen 28th by the Minnesota Lynx.
Sjerven, a native of Rogers, Minnesota, was three times the Summit League defensive player of the year and three times selected to the All-Summit League first team. She was on the All-Summit League tournament team four times and a finalist for the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year.
Sjerven, a 6’3″ center, is the Coyotes’ all-time leader in blocked shots and is in the top 10 in program history in scoring, rebounding and steals.
This past season, Sjerven averaged 15.1 points and 7.7 rebounds with 62 blocked shots, the third time in four years at USD that she blocked at least that many shots.
The Lynx will begin preseason workouts next week, will open their season at Seattle on May 6 and play their home opener on May 8 against Washington.
