PIERRE – On Saturday, the Pierre Governors, five-time defending 11AA champions, will host Aberdeen Central, whom they eliminated in the semifinal round of the playoffs in 2021.
Most of Pierre’s talented skill position players return, including all-state quarterback and University of Washington commit Lincoln Kienholz, plus receivers Jack Merkwan, Jett Zabel and Brecken Krueger. Also, Pierre adds former all-state lineman Jason Maciejczak, the former Douglas Patriot who moved with his family to Pierre. Dan Maciejczak, Jason’s father and former Douglas head coach, is now a Governor assistant.
Pierre Head Coach Steve Steele said that with so many skill players returning, the Governors should be formidable.
Steele said that the addition of Jason Maciejczak is a boon for both Governor lines.
Steele said that on Saturday, the Governors may have a tough time containing senior Aberdeen Central running back Karson Carda.
Pierre will look to be the second team in the playoff era (since 1981) of South Dakota high school football to win six consecutive championships. The first was West Central, who won six straight 11A championships from 2000 to 2005.
Saturday’s game can be heard on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, with Brian Oakland. Coverage will begin at 6:30 PM and also can been seen at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com.
